Hello everyone, I am currently planning storage solutions at Ikea and came across the Platsa system. However, I am looking for alternatives within the Ikea range that are similarly flexible and customizable but may offer different design options or technical features. My question to the community is: What alternatives to Ikea PLATSA are available at Ikea that provide comparable modular storage but are perhaps structured differently or have additional functions? I would appreciate any specific examples, tips, and experiences.
A possible alternative to Ikea’s PLATSA system is the PAX wardrobe system. It offers extremely high flexibility, especially regarding internal organization and accessories. Unlike PLATSA, the PAX units are generally larger and designed for upright wardrobe units rather than lowboards or horizontal variations. The system allows for variable widths, heights, and depths, and there are many door options, enabling different styles to be achieved. So if you are looking for modular storage in the form of a wardrobe and value interior compartments, PAX is worth considering.

Evidence for this lies in the carcass dimensions and the lack of depth in PAX for certain uses.
Additionally, it is often overlooked that PLATSA offers modular wall-mounting options, which PAX does not. Those who use the system thoughtfully benefit from wall installation as an additional storage solution.
In addition to PAX and BESTÅ, the IVAR system could also be mentioned. IVAR is more of a classic shelving system made from untreated wood and is known for its durability and the possibility to customize, paint, or modify it. Although it is less modern and less sleek than PLATSA, it is an affordable alternative for storage solutions that do not necessarily require closed fronts.
The dimensions are somewhat less flexible than those of PLATSA, but it might be an option for open shelving.

I would like to add that PLATSA, with its shallow depth of 35 cm (14 inches), is ideal for smaller rooms or hallways, whereas PAX, with a depth of 58 cm (23 inches), is more suited for wardrobes.
So, anyone looking for a flexible lowboard or sideboard solution will find few alternatives that are as scalable and wall-mountable as PLATSA. BESTÅ is lighter and shallower than PAX but offers less height variation – with PLATSA, individual units can be stacked or combined.
In summary: PLATSA is often unbeatable for varying room heights and shapes, PAX is ideal for large wardrobes, and BESTÅ is suited for media furniture.
