Hello everyone, I am currently looking into the Brimnes furniture series from IKEA, especially the wardrobes and dressers, but I don’t find the typical look with the visible frames and the notched handles ideal for my interior style. My question to the community is: What alternatives to IKEA Brimnes are there if you are looking for similar furniture that is functional but offers a different, perhaps more modern or simply distinct appearance? What matters most to me—besides storage space and quality—are design options that don’t strongly resemble the IKEA style. I look forward to recommendations, tips on other manufacturers, or individual furniture pieces that differ fundamentally in design but provide comparable practical use. Thanks in advance!

Hello parle,

to answer your question meaningfully, it is important to highlight the main features of BRIMNES: a clearly structured system with framed fronts, often painted white, with a modern yet somewhat traditional appearance. If you are looking for something functionally similar – that is, many compartments, drawers, and storage space – but visually less of the typical "Ikea" style, there are several interesting alternatives:

- USM Haller: Modular, very modern, clean lines, metal construction, very sturdy. However, the price is significantly higher than Ikea’s.
- Cube shelving systems from String or Montana: Minimalist and flexible, often handle-free, simple and understated.
- Vintage/retro furniture in the style of the 1950s or 1960s, often made of wood with a slim profile, offers a completely different, warmer atmosphere.
- For similar storage but different fronts: manufacturers like Roll & Hill or small workshops that produce doors and fronts in various wood types and colors with smooth surfaces.

A tip: When searching, pay close attention to the handles, as these often strongly influence the overall look. Soft, handle-free fronts appear more modern than framed fronts and visible handles.

If you are handy, BRIMNES can also be individually customized with different handles and surface treatments, which works surprisingly well.

I hope this gives you a bit more guidance!

I would also recommend cabinets from Hülsta. They offer similar functionality but with much more subtle designs that don’t have the Ikea feel.

I consider the search for an alternative to be more complex than just design or function. BRIMNES is especially affordable and modular.

Alternative furniture that offers better design and similar functionality right away is usually more expensive. If design is the main factor, it’s worth looking at manufacturers in the "design furniture made in Europe" category. Brands like Vitra, USM (as already mentioned), or String tend to look more modern and are well made.

Keep in mind: the typical "IKEA look" comes from mass production and clean lines. If you want some craftsmanship, individuality, or special materials, your best option is to go for specialized stores or custom woodworking.

One more thing: it’s more worthwhile to focus on materials and surface finishes than on pure furniture shape. Solid wood and full wood fronts change the look much more noticeably than shapes alone.

Finally, to parle: What is your exact budget, and how important is material quality compared to appearance? This can help suggest targeted alternatives.
