Hello everyone,

I am currently focused on furnishing my newly rented apartment and am looking into many furniture lines, especially the IKEA Brimnes series, as it is affordable and seems quite functional at first glance. However, I have also heard some critical opinions regarding the quality, sustainability, and design, which have made me a bit uncertain.

My question to the community: What alternatives are there to the IKEA Brimnes furniture that are similarly priced but offer better workmanship, durability, and appearance? I am mainly interested in bedroom furniture (wardrobe, nightstands, bed) as well as storage solutions for the living room and would appreciate specific recommendations – ideally with tips on material choices or special features that make a difference.

Thanks in advance for your feedback!

Hey lismeo!

I know the dilemma – Brimnes can be practical, but when it comes to durability, sometimes it goes “click” instead of “clunk.” If you’re looking for alternatives that won’t break the bank, you might want to check out furniture stores like Roller or Poco. They often have similar designs, but it’s definitely worth choosing solid wood or at least veneered surfaces instead of particleboard.

- XXXLutz also often offers reliable collections that feel solid and sturdy.

- Secondhand? Sometimes you can find really nice, solid furniture at flea markets or online platforms.

Important: Make sure to carefully follow the assembly instructions to keep everything stable, so you don’t have to grab the screwdriver after a month.

Good luck hunting for the perfect wardrobe – and remember: buying furniture should be a bit of fun too!

I’d like to revisit this and add: For me, it’s important that furniture is not only practical but also produced sustainably and fairly. IKEA has made some progress here, but especially their Brimnes series with particleboard isn’t great in that respect.

I’ve had good experiences with brands like Hülsta and Möbelfabrik Rolf Benz. Although they are more expensive, design furniture often has clearance items or promotions that make them more affordable.

Also, sometimes it pays off not to save in the wrong place. Spending a bit more upfront can be cheaper in the long run if you keep the furniture for many years instead of replacing it every few years.

Ask yourself: Do you want a quick solution or a piece of furniture that lasts? That can help make your decision easier.

Who else has tips from personal experience? Looking forward to hearing.

Take a look at IKEA’s "Malm" series. It’s also from IKEA but clearly has better craftsmanship than Brimnes.

Additionally, furniture from Poco (series "Portland") or Roller (series "Svalöv") often provides higher quality at a similar price.

For affordable solid wood furniture, I recommend "Trendteam." They usually have simple but sturdy pieces.

That’s all from me.
