Hello everyone, I recently bought the IKEA Hemnes furniture piece and have a question regarding its assembly: What alternatives are there for putting together the IKEA Hemnes? I am especially interested in approaches that differ from the standard assembly instructions, such as different assembly methods, tools, or useful tips to know for making the furniture more stable or easier to build. I want to avoid just strictly following the manual and instead learn more about possible options. Maybe you also have experience with self-modified assemblies, special fastening methods, or alternative joinery techniques? Looking forward to your tips and discussions.

I think the topic of IKEA furniture and alternatives for assembly is somewhat overrated. In the end, these are budget-friendly pieces, so you shouldn’t expect miracles. Some people tinker with Hemnes furniture, replace joints, and aim for perfect stability – but that misses the point of these pieces.

Honestly: Of course, you can reinforce, solder, or screw everything together, but then you’re almost making custom furniture anyway. That raises the question of why you wouldn’t just build something yourself. In my opinion, the alternatives for assembling Hemnes furniture are mostly just gimmicks.

I understand your desire for stability – but anyone who moves should know that IKEA furniture is meant to be taken apart sometimes. Flexibility and simplicity are actually their main strengths.

This assessment seems somewhat oversimplified to me. In fact, there are legitimate, practical reasons why alternative fastening methods for IKEA Hemnes can be useful—especially with higher loads or frequent moves.

From a functional perspective, the following alternatives offer measurable benefits:
- Screw connections instead of dowels increase stability and also facilitate later disassembly.
- Reinforcements with metal brackets improve load-bearing capacity for large shelves.
- Precise pre-drilling and wood glue strengthen the joint and reduce later movement.

These methods are not “gimmicks,” but rather craftsmanship techniques recommended by DIY enthusiasts and furniture assembly professionals. IKEA itself points out the need for additional reinforcement, particularly for heavily loaded components.

Expanding on these techniques makes good sense if the furniture is expected to last a long time and withstand high stress.

I really like that different perspectives come together here! I converted my Hemnes in the living room into a media shelf and replaced the nails with metal brackets – it holds really well! Just take your time during assembly, don’t rush, and consider upgrading to better screws!

A little encouragement: Don’t be afraid to do things differently than the instructions suggest; it’s a lot of fun when everything stands stable and lasts for a long time!

Alternatively, you can consider reinforcing certain joints with assembly adhesive, which reduces susceptibility to vibrations while keeping the structure reversible in case you want to disassemble the cabinet later. I also recommend using clamps to hold the components in place during gluing. This helps prevent warping.

I would also add that it is essential to ensure precise alignment. Often, the small fittings with IKEA furniture can be problematic—if the piece is not perfectly level, doors or drawers may not function properly. A spirit level and an extra pair of hands can work wonders.
