Hello!
Since my heating system is currently being installed, I am facing a choice.
Either a buffer tank with an integrated domestic hot water tank or a buffer tank combined with a fresh water system. What would you recommend?
The details:
The house is a new build.
Heating is provided by an air-source heat pump and a hydronic masonry stove.
The buffer tank has a capacity of 1000 liters (264 gallons), and the domestic hot water tank should be 200 liters (53 gallons).
I would appreciate your experience or opinion.
Best regards

An extremely late moment to ask this fundamental question! => general guessing!
Enjoy this overall construction! You seem to have a substantial budget to use such a solution with low energy efficiency in the long run!

Good luck with this overall design! You seem to have a considerable budget to plan to use such a solution with poor energy efficiency in the long term!

What do you mean by that?
What would you suggest as better?
I can criticize anything right away.

Early assessment of the basics, planning, and sizing by an independent HVAC engineer not tied to sales! Apparently, you “saved” a few euros, but now you have to live with the results in the long term. Whether this is economically beneficial for you overall, you will find out, for example, if heat meters are installed. Usually, this leads to complete disillusionment! A pity for the initially high investment!

What is your objective!? ;-)

Hello €uro,

what determines the costs for proper planning by an MEP engineer, and what kind of amounts are we talking about for a typical single-family house?

First, the term "proper planning" needs to be defined.
Normally, this refers to the HOAI along with all associated content and standards.
In my opinion, for a single-family house, this is far too expensive. Also, most MEP firms are structurally geared towards "larger projects" and usually lack sufficient experience in the "smaller scale" sector. There are significant differences between a hotel complex or commercial building and a single-family house!
For single-family houses, it is entirely sufficient to address the most essential problem areas and to provide the system installer with the technical parameters to be adhered to, without completely restricting their design flexibility.

This always depends on the specific individual case. Key factors include the building geometry and the agreed scope of services.
I always provide a detailed offer, even if it requires substantial effort. So, no flat-rate mass business at bargain prices.

Best regards.
