Hello dear friends of my favorite forum,

Since we have extremely hard water in our building area, I am wondering whether it would make sense to install some kind of water softener right from the start. There are various methods available, with their effectiveness being more or less verifiable. Has anyone had experience with this or even had such a system installed themselves? I would appreciate any help!

Thank you for the clear explanation! What initial costs should I expect?

Around 2500-3000 euros including installation. But in return, you get something solid.

I can only agree with the previous poster. At the end of 2014, I had a system from BWT installed as part of the complete heating and plumbing installation of my single-family house and paid about 1900€ for it (Bavaria).

In my opinion, only so-called "weakly acidic ion exchangers" make sense. These replace the Ca and Mg ions (which occur in water as calcium carbonate, calcium hydrogen carbonate, and magnesium carbonate) with Na (NaCl – common salt). During regeneration, the bound Ca and Mg ions are flushed down the drain, and fresh Na ions bind to the resins. Therefore, salt tablets need to be refilled regularly.
