Hello everyone,
I’m planning to design my wardrobe based on an IKEA KALLAX shelving unit because I appreciate its modular design and value for money. However, in my initial attempts, I noticed that the modules – especially when used freestanding or as room dividers – can feel somewhat “loose” and not as stable as I would like for a wardrobe. Specifically, I’m concerned about the rigidity and stability of the structure so that clothes, jackets, and accessories can hang or rest securely without the unit wobbling or warping.

Does anyone have experience with this and can offer advice on how to prevent or reduce this “looseness” in a KALLAX framework when used as a wardrobe solution? I would appreciate suggestions for reinforcements, fastenings, or practical additions that are particularly suitable for use as a wardrobe with heavier textiles.

At that time, I used beech wood battens measuring 20x20 mm (about 0.8x0.8 inches), which I screwed next to the back panels. It holds very well, and as Dilen mentioned: screws are better than glue because they allow for modifications. My shelf is now much more stable, and importantly: you shouldn’t rely solely on the snap-fit system.

If you have really heavy coats and bags, I would recommend using stainless steel or galvanized screws in case moisture gets in.

Don’t be discouraged by any looseness; it can be easily fixed.

Great, thanks to all of you for the many practical tips! I will do it this way:

- Replace the back panel with 6mm (1/4 inch) MDF
- Secure diagonal braces made of pine 20x30 mm (3/4 x 1 1/4 inch) with screws
- Reinforce side and corner joints additionally with metal brackets
- Equip the base with non-slip pads

If this is not sufficient, I could still use a light top fixation, but I would like to avoid that.

I will report back once I have built it and how it goes. Thanks again for your input! 🙂
