Hello,

we are planning to build a garden shed ourselves. Not from wood, but from masonry blocks. So far, we are considering sand-lime bricks, as they seem to be the simplest option at the moment. The garden shed will have external dimensions of approximately 3.85m x 2.2m (12.6 ft x 7.2 ft) and be about 2.3m (7.5 ft) high. The roof will be properly covered with clay tiles.

Could anyone tell me what thickness the bricks should be? Two of the four walls will be clad with facing bricks from the outside after completion. The other two sides won’t be visible anyway because of the fence.

If you have any other suggestions regarding the type of bricks, I am open to ideas.

Thanks in advance and best regards,
Manuela

Hi,

since a house doesn’t have to withstand much, I would use the thinnest bricks available. Even so, it will still be quite compact. If I were you, I would rather use wood.

Hi,

since a garden shed is fully exposed to the weather, I would use stones that do not absorb water easily. Otherwise, it always tends to be damp, which can lead to mold growth.

Hello Ganurin, which type of stone is best to use? As mentioned, two of the four walls will no longer be worked on or treated from the outside, and none of the walls will be worked on from the inside. But the house should have a solid roof with roof tiles. Which stones are the most suitable and also affordable?

Thanks and best regards

Hello Manuela,
Regarding price and performance, I would recommend concrete partition blocks ZW12. According to your specifications, you will need 255 concrete blocks.
Dimensions W/L/H: 12/50/22.1 cm (5/20/8.7 inches)
Block consumption: 9.1 pcs/m² (pcs per square meter)
Mortar consumption: approx. 6 liters/m² (1.6 gallons/m²)
Weight per block: 15 kg (33 lbs)
Pieces per pallet: 80

I think this is the best option for your project. As for the price, unfortunately, you will have to check yourself since it varies, but I would estimate around 1 euro per piece.

Best regards.

Hello Schakal,
that sounds very vague.
I guess you could also name a company for me? The term "concrete blocks" doesn’t ring a bell for me at all. I know Poroton, sand-lime bricks, and clay bricks, but not concrete blocks. Could there be regional differences in the terminology for these types of blocks?
Thanks anyway!
Best regards
