highLight3 Feb 2026 14:44Hello and good day,
I have unsuccessfully read through various threads. It’s great that I still received some useful tips. However, I couldn’t find anything on the actual topic.
We have completely renovated a house from 1967. Now my last project is to bring an old existing bathroom in the basement back to life. I have stripped everything down. The plumbing is already preinstalled, as is the toilet cistern. A small shower will also be installed.
One of the four walls faces the earth (all the others face adjacent rooms). The exterior wall is made of 24cm (9.5 inches) pumice concrete blocks. The room is approximately 60% below ground level. A new basement window has also been installed in the wall.
My question is: how and with what should I cover the walls (especially the exterior one) in order to later apply an insulating paint or insulating foil from the inside, to then install tiles on top? I am not keen on plastering, so I’d rather avoid that. Can I simply install aluminum profiles and then cover with drywall from the inside? I have no idea how that would behave between the exterior wall and the drywall; in particular, whether mold might develop.
My second question concerns the floor. For installation purposes, I still need to install a shower tray and then level it with screed. What is the best way to proceed?
I hope I have clearly explained my problem?!
I appreciate any tips.
Regards, Markus
