Hello everyone,
Today we planned our new IKEA kitchen and came across a question we couldn’t fully answer.
It concerns the corner base cabinet FA 157 with the pull-out fittings.
There are already some posts about this cabinet, but I couldn’t find a clear answer and hope you can help me.
For the Faktum corner base cabinet with pull-out (FA 157), the IKEA colleague mentioned two minimum clearances that we “must” observe:
1. The distance from the FA 157 to the adjacent cabinet in the corner should be 5 cm (2 inches).
2. The distance from the FA 157 to the wall (short side of the Faktum cabinet in the corner) should be 10 cm (4 inches).
(1) I understand this—to allow the door of the next cabinet to open (although 1–2 cm [0.5–1 inch] might be sufficient).
(2) I don’t understand this, since the pull-out frame can be extended even when the FA 157 door is not fully open.
These 10 cm (4 inches) “away from the wall” cause me two issues that I cannot resolve:
a. For the wall cabinets: the corner wall cabinet above the FA 157 and a 60 cm (24 inches) wall cabinet are 10 cm (4 inches) shorter than the FA 157 “10 cm wall clearance.” The IKEA colleague recommended a filler strip between the corner wall cabinet and the next wall cabinet. Not really a great solution.
b. The adjacent cabinets (to the right in the picture) would also need to be pulled 10 cm (4 inches) away from the wall or I would have to add another filler strip to make the corner look right (i.e., not white). Also not a great solution.
What should I make of these 10 cm (4 inches)? What purpose do they serve, and do they not inherently make a corner solution “unusable”?
I would really appreciate if you could help me or have any ideas on how to fix this “little problem.”
Thanks in advance.
Best regards,
Marcel

IKEA-Experte29 Apr 2013 22:27Hello,
I have this corner cabinet and was forced to install it without the 10 cm (4 inches). There would have been problems if the handle of the adjacent cabinet had been too close to the corner cabinet. With a door (LA 128 mm) in the middle of an 80 cm (31.5 inches) unit, it worked fine.
I recently removed the pull-out shelf. In my opinion, it isn’t any good. Each shelf can only hold a maximum of 12 kg (26 lbs). That’s not much considering the surface area. Over time, the shelves also sagged, and the bottom one partly scraped against the bottom of the cabinet carcass. Additionally, the shelves are inclined by default, so the pulled-out shelf swings back by itself and hits the edge of the cabinet carcass.
Instead, I installed drawers. However, I had to come up with a solution for the front panel because now the handles of the adjacent cabinet were in the way.
By the way, the corresponding fittings for Metod specify a maximum load of 18 kg (40 lbs).

For the corresponding Metod units, a maximum load of 18 kg (40 lbs) is specified.[*] How do you know that? Is it possible to plan a Metod kitchen somewhere in advance?

IKEA-Experte2 May 2013 14:37METOD is already available on ikea.no or ikea.dk. You can also use Google Chrome to translate everything right away. It works best in English. The German translation seems to be based on the English version and becomes less clear.
