Hello and good day,
we would like to install a glass canopy (3x5 m (10x16 ft)) over our terrace in a multi-family house. The owners living above us are concerned that the rain could be very loud in their bedroom directly above. Has anyone ever measured the noise level of rain inside a room above a canopy? Or can someone provide sources where I can find information about this?
I cannot find any decibel (dB) data online and don’t know what to tell my neighbors regarding this.

Thank you very much in advance

We have this type of glass roof, and my son sleeps underneath it. I just asked him how much the noise, for example from rain, bothers him. He said he has never noticed it.

I would even go further—I personally love it when we sleep under our gable roof and hear the rain tapping on it. You can clearly hear it in our bedroom, and there is nothing better for falling asleep.
But of course, this is a very personal feeling. I would be the last person to criticize others for worrying about noise emission.

Our bedroom is located above our terrace roof: I cannot hear any significant noise.

Absolutely no noise at all. Sleeping directly above our surveillance.

Information about the sound pressure level wouldn’t really help you. For example, what use would you make of the information that our glass roof (pitch 12.7°) measures exactly 42 dB at a distance of one meter during a heavy rain shower (1.35 mm (0.05 inches) water column per hour)?

The noise emissions won’t jeopardize your project. I consider those concerns exaggerated. It’s always a tricky situation with the neighbors.

Hello Philipp,
if you tell me that you measured 42 dB in this case, that already helps me a lot. Because then I can explain to my neighbors that it’s about the noise level of a quiet conversation at 1 meter (3 feet) distance. And I believe they will understand that.
Now my question is whether you actually measured the 42 dB, or if this is just a theoretical value for now...
Best regards

A glass canopy is obviously part of normal use, so what are they complaining about…

Well, I still have to get the consent of the co-owners…

Nonsense, glass is no louder than rain splashing on a paved terrace.
Metal sheets are noisy, and plastic panels can also be louder, but not heavy glass as used for these types of roofings.
Don’t let it worry you.

I’m not letting myself be worried, but somehow I still depend on it. Thank you very much for your comment...
