Hello,

we are wondering on which side of the door is the best option to install a video doorbell.
I have attached our floor plan of the entrance area.

There is the option to mount it either on the right side of the front door on the protrusion or on the left side next to the door on the wall.
Which option would you say is better?

A simple Ring, Nest, or Eufy doorbell is planned.

So, we are one step further now.

Red is out for the video doorbell. Visitors would be standing too close to the door and also too close to the doorbell.
We will install the ekey on red.

For the video doorbell, only green and blue remain.
We can't decide between them.

I have a few questions:

At what height is the mailbox usually mounted? Is the top edge around 1.20–1.25m (4–4.1 feet)?
The windowsill height of the guest WC window is 1.30m (4.3 feet). Can the mailbox be hung below that, or is that too low?

Should we consider putting everything weatherprotected under the porch roof?

Red = ekey, that is fixed.

What should we do with green and blue?

Option 1: Green = video doorbell and mailbox side by side, with the video doorbell closer to the door. Blue = nothing.

Option 2: Green = video doorbell and blue = mailbox.

Option 3: Green = mailbox and blue = video doorbell.

Which option would you recommend and why?

I appreciate your help.
We are already getting desperate :/

@AlexKayn ... wouldn’t it be helpful to include the image again in such a summary post so that it’s clear which colors correspond to red, green, and blue?

I’ve attached it again.

Sorry, I didn’t think of this earlier, and sorry if I’m bothering you, but we’re really struggling right now and want to avoid making a wrong decision that can’t be changed later.

I definitely see a market gap for front doors with an integrated video doorbell and a built-in insulated mail slot.

These really aren’t decisions that you can’t change. If necessary, you can always install a battery-powered doorbell and relocate the mailbox.
I would just stand by a door and try out which distances and heights feel right to me.

Although our build was nine years ago, and a lot has changed—especially in the technical area—looking back, we had really poor selections during the specification phase. This was exactly where the builder and particularly the electrician could have earned more by providing proper advice. The electrical specification focused more on switch series (which we really didn’t care about) rather than on functionality.

Such products do exist, but because they involve multiple trades, it often causes too many problems for the general contractor.

@ Alex

Blue has the advantage that a visitor can stand in front of it, but if they step forward, you might no longer see them. With red, the visitor stands fully in front of the door, or if they keep a distance, you might not see them either. Green is the same if they move towards the door. As you correctly noted, you can avoid this by installing the camera at an angle. Doorbird offers wedge accessories for this purpose, but they are not very attractive. I don’t know if Ring also offers similar accessories.

If you’re uncertain, have empty conduits installed in the three locations along with blank junction boxes. Ring devices are usually easy to install yourself. You can test them out, and if it fits, open the junction box and pull the cables in.

Alternatively, order the device now and test it out before the cables are laid.

We recently retrofitted a Goliath video door system with two indoor units ourselves. It’s not complicated. On Monday, a company will install the automatic lock on the door. That was too risky for me to do on my own.
