Hello,
we are wondering on which side of the door is the best option to install a video doorbell.
I have attached our floor plan of the entrance area.
There is the option to mount it either on the right side of the front door on the protrusion or on the left side next to the door on the wall.
Which option would you say is better?
A simple Ring, Nest, or Eufy doorbell is planned.

Hmm, I don’t understand 🙂
The overhang is only 30cm (12 inches) deep. How would you "step further in front of the door and then look into empty space"?
The red dot doesn’t make sense to me or seems to have more disadvantages than advantages.
If a visitor stands in front of the door, the camera would only capture them from the side, and not very well at that!?
If there are more people standing further to the right, you wouldn’t see them at all... well. I understand it as the doorbell includes the camera. And if you press the bell at the blue dot and then take one step forward, the bell won’t detect you anymore.
Best to use a battery-powered doorbell;)
Otherwise, I would go with the red dot.

Although 30cm (12 inches) isn’t a big distance, stepping forward means you are no longer directly in the camera’s view.
At my parents’ house, it’s set up the same way: a doorbell with a camera positioned to the side, right by the door. I’m not there every day, but I observed it for a while since we wanted to find the ideal position for our own house. Usually, the delivery person looked at the doorbell—because of the camera and intercom—while their hand was on the door handle at the same time.

The battery doesn’t need to be replaced, only recharged via USB. Realistically, maybe every 6 months. We don’t want that either; the doorbell should be hardwired. We don’t want to have to remember to charge the doorbell, and while it’s charging, there would be no doorbell, or you’d have to use a replaceable battery.

I understand that the doorbell contains the camera. Yes, that’s correct, for example the Ring doorbell has the button and camera combined in one device. The Ring and many others are usually installed about 1.20 m (4 feet) above the ground to work optimally.
We currently still have freedom to choose the doorbell position, so I’m trying to figure out the best spot.
(We’re already getting frustrated.) Every position has pros and cons.
At the red spot, visitors stand directly in front of the front door, about 15 cm (6 inches) away.
At the green spot, the doorbell would be on the wrong side.
At both the green and red spots, the doorbell is under the wall overhang (which is also covered, about 30 cm (12 inches)) and protected from rain and snow.
At the blue spot, a small porch roof would have to be built, so visitors are not standing in the rain waiting for me to answer or to use the intercom feature.
It’s also a question whether 30 cm (12 inches) is enough as a porch roof or if a wider cover should be installed anyway.

Yes, that’s correct. For example, the Ring integrates the doorbell button and camera in one device. The Ring and many others are recommended to be installed about 1.20 m (4 feet) above the ground for optimal performance.

At the blue dot, a canopy would need to be added so visitors don’t stand in the rain while I open the door or use the intercom.
It’s also a question whether 30 cm (12 inches) is enough as a canopy or if a larger one should be installed anyway. The latter depends on which side your entrance is on. Ours is on the east side, so we don’t need a canopy since the 30 cm (12 inches) roof overhang is sufficient. If the canopy is not already integrated into the house, I would wait and try first before installing one.
