Hello everyone and happy New Year,

I am looking for a video door entry system that communicates via Wi-Fi between units.

A brief explanation: In 2019, we renovated an old building. At that time, we wanted to install a video system and even had one at home, but after a short time, my wife didn’t like it anymore, so it was returned. Unfortunately, the topic then fell into the background and was forgotten. Currently, we have a wireless doorbell system installed, which now, after several coronary artery procedures on my wife’s part, should finally be replaced by a proper solution. We do not have KNX installed in the house; it’s all old conventional wiring. Network cables were installed on every floor, and there is strong, comprehensive Wi-Fi coverage throughout the house.

We want a system that can be expanded. The image of the entrance area should be transmitted both to a display and to the mobile phone, and the door should be able to be opened from both the display and the phone (the door is equipped with an opener and can be controlled via a 2-wire connection). An intercom function should also be included. It would be great if the system could also be used as a kind of internal house communication system. The communication between the individual modules should be done via Wi-Fi, since there is no RJ45 (Ethernet) outlet near the intended display locations. It would also be desirable if the camera data could be saved to a NAS without having to use the vendor’s cloud service.

I hope I have provided enough information to understand what I am looking for!

I have already searched here and read through various threads but have not found the right solution.

I look forward to your suggestions!

Best regards

Maybe wait for Apple? Is there supposed to be something coming this year with HomeKit. Otherwise, something like Ring. They also offer battery-powered versions. Without cloud, it won’t work over Wi-Fi. And it definitely won’t be cheap.

I can’t think of any provider off the top of my head that fully meets your wishlist 100%. Metzler offers solutions using 2-wire technology for the door unit and integration into the AVM ecosystem. Here, you might be able to incorporate your requirements for Wi-Fi and intercom by combining it with the Fritz!Box.

Do you have more than just power available at least where the outdoor unit is going to be installed? For example, a data cable or at least a 2-wire connection?

If yes, in my opinion, an Akuvox system could be feasible, consisting of one of the door stations that meet your requirements or fit your budget, plus any number of indoor units (which are also available in WiFi versions).

With this setup, you could basically cover everything – intercom system, intercom function between screens, routing of camera images also via third-party NAS devices, etc., all without cloud connection.

Where it gets more complicated is with smartphones – you still need a cloud account, unless you accept that it only works at home (meaning, on the same network). Alternatively, you can equip smartphones with SIP clients and connect them without using the cloud as well.

Theoretically, it could also work without a data cable / 2-wire line to the outdoor unit, since some Akuvox door stations can be connected via LTE, but that would be like using a sledgehammer to crack a nut.

Hello everyone,

First of all, thank you for your answers.

@rick: Unfortunately, I don’t have any Apple devices.

@wiltshire: I will check out what devices Metzler offers. Maybe there’s something suitable.

@Harakiri: Yes, there are 4 wires available, but I’m not exactly sure where they end. They are leftovers from the old doorbell. You could repurpose them since those aren’t in use. Possibly extend them, etc. I can do without the image on my phone when I’m away (if I’m not home, then I’m not home). I will also check what Akuvox has!

Thanks again to everyone; maybe someone will come up with another idea.

Have a look at the manufacturer Akuvox; however, you will need a network connection with Power over Ethernet (PoE) at the outdoor intercom.
I have the R25A model, which is connected via a network cable and powered with PoE.
No indoor display is necessary, but the manufacturer does offer some.
We only use our smartphones.
The app rings like an incoming call, and by answering, you can communicate via video call.
The cloud-based app also works without any issues outside of the home network—I was able to speak with the mail carrier from my workplace without any problems.
There are alarm functions, detection features for unusual movements, and two changeover relays that can be managed via an RFID reader unit.
All revolving around a very easy-to-install IP video camera.
For the initial registration, the device must be registered by Akuvox or an authorized service provider using the MAC address and then logged into the app with the initial access data.
After that, everything can be configured independently.
The R25A costs about 270€ online.
