You can do it that way if you have a lot of time. But while a soil survey is being conducted, you can also use the time to find your contracting partner. For some, it can take several months to find someone trustworthy.
Of course, you can also waste your time thinking about and around a pantry.

Update: The geologist has been on site, and as expected, the soil conditions are poor... Nevertheless, we will proceed with building a basement.

An appointment with an architect is now scheduled. I have agreements with almost all contractors except for the most important one. I still need to find the structural builder. But that can only happen once we have a proper floor plan...

Now you have a situation that actually argues against having a basement, and yet you are building one anyway.
What kind of situation would have had to occur for you to decide against the basement?

Hmm, I think that scenario is almost nonexistent in hindsight... To be honest, I also don’t see any ground-level alternatives to the basement. At least nothing that would provide an extra 10–20m² (100–215 sq ft) of usable space. We debated it in the evening and decided to just invest the money instead...

On the lower side, we hit rocky soil at about 2–2.5 meters (6.5–8 feet). The groundwater there is around 1.4 meters (4.5 feet).
On the upper side, the rocky soil is about 2.5 meters (8 feet) deep, and groundwater just under 2 meters (6.5 feet). The geologist also mentioned that the soil there is still easy enough for a large excavator to handle.

Since we also found out there is a 1.5-meter (5 feet) height difference between the outside walls on the lower and upper sides, it wouldn’t be such a big issue if we raise the lower side by that 1.5 meters (5 feet).
