Hello,
is there anyone here who has a porch with a roof cover and can say whether they are satisfied with it or not?
We are planning to build a wooden house in the Swedish style next year and are unsure if having a porch would be an advantage or disadvantage. Our plot is located on a moderate slope, and the house would be oriented so that the porch is on the backside, where the sun would shine during the day. The roof length would be 3 m (10 feet). I am mainly worried that this might block the light from entering the house and create shade all day long...
Does anyone have experience with this?

There are positive and negative aspects: Naturally, the amount of daylight entering the apartment is reduced – but without a picture or drawing, it’s hard to assess whether this is critical or not. Advantage of a glass roof: the apartment receives good natural light. Disadvantage of a glass roof: it can get hot and stuffy underneath. Disadvantage of a glass roof: have you considered how to clean the roof?

Disadvantage of an opaque roof: it turns into a cave.

Conclusion: I would probably not do it.

Julialein, for certain reasons I do not respond to members who only have one (question) post, as there is no meaningful interaction.

However, I would like to say that if you plan to build a Swedish-style house, you should be aware of its advantages and disadvantages.
It is not really a Swedish house if it does not have a loggia on the ground floor. You can prevent lack of natural light by designing open window areas without overhangs, facing south or west.

You're welcome!

Thank you for the responses; I am aware of the pros and cons. I am more interested in hearing about other people’s experiences—whether they are satisfied and if they would build again with or without a veranda.

Still, many thanks for the answers!
