ᐅ Ventilation system with strong chimney odor

Hello everyone,

We have been living in our new house for just under six months, which is equipped with a Tecalor THZ 303 with a controlled ventilation system. We had no issues during the summer. However, for about a week now, our neighbor has started using his wood stove, which produces heavy smoke and a strong odor. The neighbor’s chimney is on the same side of the building where our fresh air intake is located. Since then, every evening our entire house smells strongly of smoke/fireplace; my partner’s eyes water, and I get headaches.

Is there a way to reduce the smoke entering the intake without me having to go down to the basement every time to turn off the ventilation system, hoping the neighbor isn’t using the stove during that time?

No other chimneys in the area or neighborhood produce such heavy smoke — only the one that is directly affecting our fresh air intake.

Best regards

The fundamental issue here is probably the neighbor’s fire. Normally, smoke is generated when lighting the fire, but after a few minutes, hardly any smoke should be coming out of the chimney.

Of course, this is still annoying for you. Hopefully, the neighbor will learn how to fire properly and not let the chimney smoke excessively.

Hello
Thank you very much for the many responses.
The neighbor’s house is a multi-family building about 15 years old. The only neighbor who also uses a stove is the one on the ground floor. They installed an external stainless steel chimney afterward, which is actually quite tall and extends all the way up to the roof. That’s why it surprises me so much that our ventilation system is pulling in the smoke like that.
Is there any option with the Tecalor to turn the ventilation off completely, for example between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m., and then turn it back on at 8 p.m.?
We are not always at home during that time, so I could manually switch off the ventilation. But the risk of forgetting to turn it back on is too high for me.

Best regards

Just ask Tecalor what solutions they suggest (controls, filters, sensors...). They surely don’t want their customers to be completely dissatisfied.

If you can already see that it’s smoking heavily, the problem is likely with your neighbor rather than with you. You should politely talk to them and ask them to burn proper wood.
If they are uncooperative, the only option is to document it with photos and inform the local authorities and the chimney inspector.
Such environmental pollution is unnecessary, regardless of your ventilation system...

Good luck!

Hello Christina,

We also have a Tecalor system installed in the basement – you can program the mechanical ventilation system to be turned off for specific periods that you define yourself.

However, as I have mentioned several times, I would first talk to your neighbor about your issue. Something is seriously wrong there, either with how the stove is being operated or with the materials being burned.

If speaking with your neighbor does not lead to any improvement, I would contact the local regulatory authority and the district chimney inspector to report the problems.

Best regards,

Hello everyone,

I just wanted to give an update. I have talked to the neighbors, and they definitely do not burn wet wood.
But we still have the same problem every evening.
The company Tecalor has no solution; there are no special filters for this issue.
Even with a completely new filter, I can’t get rid of the soot smell in the ventilation system. When standing near the floor outlet, the air still smells like smoke even though a) the stove isn’t being used and b) the filter is brand new.

Besides the two filters, are there any other filters in the Tecalor system that can be replaced? Or how can I clean the system again?

Best regards
