Hello, I have purchased a prefabricated house (timber frame construction). While working inside the house, I accidentally drilled a hole for an input socket and nicked the ventilation duct. There are a few small holes in it.

I initially sealed the holes in the duct with silicone. Since it is located inside a partition wall, I do not expect significant temperature fluctuations. Therefore, I assume that no condensation will form inside. However, I am not an expert and would like to hear your opinions on this.

Best regards,
Martin

Is it an exhaust or a supply air duct? For exhaust, it’s usually not a problem; I would just seal it with aluminum tape and that should be fine. For supply air, depending on how much the supply air valves attached to the duct are throttled, the pressure could cause it to become leaky over time.

Adhesive tape and silicone do not provide long-term stability! And after 3 years, when it has long been forgotten, the problem becomes evident again.

I would recommend PU mounting adhesive (e.g. from SikaFlex) if you have good enough access to the damaged area.

@konibar You are definitely right about that! But with an exhaust pipe, a minimal leak wouldn’t bother me, which is why I’m asking.

Hello, how can I tell if this is an exhaust or supply air duct? I’m thinking of removing the silicone again and applying SikaFlex adhesive; that should give me long-lasting peace of mind. :-)

Which outlet does the pipe lead to? Can you identify it? Then check there…
