ᐅ Ventilate the kitchen sink/dishwasher drain through the roof?

Hello everyone,

I’m not sure if this question belongs here or rather in the planning section.

We are about to start construction on our single-family house. We are building a ground floor plus a basement due to the sloping site, so the main bathroom and bedrooms will be in the basement. The main bathroom will be vented through a roof vent. On the ground floor, there is a guest toilet with a washbasin, which will be vented through a second roof vent.

No roof vent is planned for the kitchen sink/dishwasher drainage.

We are now wondering if this drainage also needs to be vented. Of course, these questions come up on the weekend when we can’t ask the construction company.

Could you please give us some feedback?

Thank you very much in advance.

Hi, it’s on the ground floor, yes, the sink is located in front of the window, and the terrace is directly outside.

Yes, we had the same setup (I believe last year). At that time, the original poster also had a sink in front of the window and was concerned that odors from a ventilation outlet in the wall might drift onto the barbecue. I think I was able to clarify that, but I didn’t find it just now.

Honestly, I hadn’t even thought about that ☺️ I didn’t know it was possible to vent directly through the exterior wall. The question is, if you don’t install any vent at all, would that be a problem?

If you poke just one hole instead of two in the lid of a cream container, you will notice the difference in the evenness of the flow. That’s what this is about: ensuring the air column inside the pipe does not create a sort of “vacuum effect.”

With emphasis on “directly,” yes. Over a short distance, bending the air path by 90° does not affect the valve’s function (what is meant here by “ventilation” is actually pressure equalization). However, if you had about five meters (16 feet) of pipe after the bend, the desired effect would be reduced due to the less favorable ratio between length and cross-sectional area — this is also the main reason for the specific pipe diameter of downpipes.
