Hello, I am renovating our 100-year-old house and am now unsure about the vapor barrier. I have already researched a lot online but keep finding different approaches...
I have three areas where I’m not sure.
1. The ceiling between the basement and the living room is partly being replaced. The structure is shown in the attached picture; looking from the basement side, there is first a layer of boards, then the existing wooden beams. I want to insulate between the beams with mineral wool and close the top with subfloor panels. Above that will be laminate or hardwood flooring. Now the question is: vapor barrier—yes or no? And if yes, should it be only between the beams or covering the entire surface directly under the subfloor panels?
2. I also want to add some insulation to the exterior wall with 45mm (1.75 inches) mineral wool (which is the maximum thickness I can fit). The structure would then be: existing wooden cladding from around 1920 on the outside, then the mineral wool insulation, and finally gypsum board as the interior finish. Here too, I wonder if a vapor barrier is needed between the gypsum board and the insulation.
3. One exterior wall will have only gypsum board added to the interior. Is a vapor barrier needed there?
Thank you very much for the help.
