Hello everyone,

I am considering using an IKEA BILLY bookcase as a shoe rack and would like to know if the BILLY is sturdy and strong enough to hold several pairs of shoes without issues. I read that each shelf can support a maximum of about 15 kg (33 lbs), and since shoes can vary in weight (for example, heavy winter boots vs. light sneakers), I wonder if the unit is suitable for long-term use, especially when storing many pairs across multiple shelves. Does anyone have practical experience or tips on whether the BILLY bookcase works well as a shoe rack in terms of stability and durability? Thanks in advance!

The BILLY shelf can handle that. As long as you don’t exceed the weight limits, there won’t be any issues. Shoes are usually light enough.

To go into the topic a bit deeper: The BILLY shelves are made of particleboard with a melamine coating, typically supporting a load of around 13–15 kg (29–33 lbs) per shelf. The load capacity largely depends on how the weight is distributed and how much of the shelf depth is loaded.

For shoe shelving, keep in mind that heavy boots or winter shoes can weigh between 1.5 and 3 kg (3.3–6.6 lbs) per pair. So, if you place about three pairs of heavy shoes on one shelf, you could quickly reach the limit.

An important observation: Over time, the shelves may bend, especially when they have a large depth (e.g., 40 cm (16 inches) for BILLY). This can be remedied by adding extra support or replacing the shelves with sturdier boards, such as plywood. Attaching the shelf unit to the wall also noticeably increases stability – this is definitely recommended.

If you plan to use the shelf exclusively for shoes, I would suggest regularly checking the weight and reinforcing the shelves as needed or avoiding placing heavy loads on one shelf too often.

Additionally: The BILLY shelves are primarily designed as bookcases and intended for frequent rearranging and moderate loads. Depending on the type, shoes do not usually impose an unusually high load, but moisture and dirt can affect the material over time.

In my experience, durability improves significantly if you maintain the shelf well and keep the shelves free from moisture. I also recommend storing fewer pairs per shelf for heavier shoes to keep the load low.

If you want long-term stability, shelves with solid wood shelves or metal frames may be more durable. However, for typical household use, I consider a BILLY shelf to be quite suitable.

The load capacity depends greatly on how the weight is distributed and how evenly the shelves are loaded across their entire depth.

Exactly, here are some precise details: The approximate load capacity of a single BILLY shelf is about 13 kg (29 lbs), distributed over 80 cm (31.5 inches) width and a depth between 28 and 40 cm (11 to 16 inches). If shoes are placed unevenly or near the edges, the risk of sagging increases.

This is an important point: The recommendation to keep the shelf dry and clean is crucial, as moisture attacks particleboard and reduces its load-bearing capacity.

My recommendation for the person asking:

- Check the weight of shoes, especially heavy boots.
- Do not load more than 2-3 kg (4.4 to 6.6 lbs) per 30 cm (12 inches) of shelf width.
- Reinforce the shelves with additional support strips if necessary.
- Use wall attachments to improve safety and stability.

With these measures, the BILLY shelf is quite suitable as a shoe rack, even for multiple pairs.
