ᐅ Unifi Dream Machine or USG with Cloud Key

Hi all,

I am currently working on setting up a network. Through various threads here, I came across Ubiquiti and find their products quite appealing.

Now it’s time to choose the components.

Requirements:
- Support 16 CAT6a network outlets (14 in rooms + 2 spare)
- Support 8 CAT6a with PoE (3x Doorbird, 4x access points, 1 spare)
- Magenta TV
- Internet feed via Telekom Speedport Smart 3

I enjoy reports, statistics, and configuration options but basically do not want to have to adjust settings every day. In other words, everything should primarily "just work."

I have looked into different setups:

Option 1:
- Dream Machine Pro
- Switch-16-150w
- 4 Nano HD

Option 2:
- USG (Pro?)
- Cloud Key
- Switch 24 PoE
- 4 Nano HD

Option 3 – No Unifi
- Any 24-port PoE switch
- 4 matching access points

Between option 1 and 2, I tend to lean toward option 1, since the price difference is minimal. However, when summarizing, the question arose whether such an infrastructure is justified for “this small network.” Hence option 3.

Best regards,
Harv

Sorry, you can pretty much forget that with Ubiquiti. The values they "measure" are completely unreliable. Likewise, you can also forget Magenta TV as it currently stands – these devices simply can’t handle it without major workarounds. The UDM or CK are nice for combined management, but as Tarnari already mentioned, there are hardly any benefits with that setup. Depending on the bandwidth of your internet connection, the small USG can also easily struggle. I still like the Ubiquiti products, but they are far from the universal solutions they are sometimes portrayed as.

If there are no major additional requirements, I would choose option 3.

- Speedport as router
- Any switch that supports IGMPv3 for Magenta TV
- 4 x Nano HD units managed with Unifi Controller on a Raspberry Pi or NAS

Exactly! Although for IGMP, the router should actually be a switch.

Edit: Even the controller can be on a simple laptop if needed. Once installed, you don’t need it running 24/7 for the system to work.

The question is whether you really need four Nano HD units. I would start with two and see if that’s enough.

Depending on the circumstances and if you want 5 GHz coverage almost everywhere, that is not an exaggeration. However, it certainly marks the beginning of the "nerd level."

Thank you very much. Yes, I had already suspected that it would be closer to option 3. Does anyone have a recommendation for a reliable switch to use? (@Tarnari you seem to have experience with the requirements for Magenta TV?)
