ᐅ Insulation below the slab or above the slab?

Hello everyone,

In the construction description of our planned house, it literally states:

“The slab foundation will have thermal insulation (under-slab and edge insulation) of 80mm WLG 035, or corresponding insulation under the slab according to the energy certificate.”

In our discussion with the contractor, he referred to the insulation under the slab as screed insulation and explained that he would use this option instead of under-slab insulation. His reasoning was based on a comparison to roof insulation, where insulation is installed inside the building to retain heat... therefore, screed insulation makes more sense.
This sounds plausible to a layperson at first, but I would like to have this statement critically reviewed—not least to form my own opinion and be able to participate in discussions on the topic…

What are the advantages of one option versus the other?
Are insulation under the slab and screed insulation actually the same?
What specifications would the insulation under the slab need to have to achieve the same efficiency as the mentioned under-slab and edge insulation?
Which option is more expensive?

I hope you can help me!

Best regards,
David
