Hello and good day,

before I install the gravel and porcelain stoneware tiles for my terrace, I would like to optionally lay an electric underfloor heating system in advance, in case the terrace is later covered or converted into a conservatory. This way, we can simply plug it in and heat the floor.

The question is, which underfloor heating system is recommended and suitable for outdoor use? And how should it be installed — beneath the gravel or on top of it with the terrace tiles then laid over it (for optimal heat transfer)?

Terrace area: 5 m x 8 m (16 ft x 26 ft)
Thank you all. Best regards, Tarik

It doesn’t make sense to install underfloor heating in a floor that is not insulated underneath and is exposed to the weather.

If you really want to take precautions, you would need to prepare the entire floor construction as if it were intended for a heated conservatory or sunroom. Alternatively, wait until after the conversion to a conservatory. Installing electric or water-based heating pipes now would be a waste of money.

Especially in the summer...

Please share some details about your setup. Floor structure / conservatory / pictures, etc.

Then you could also give a recommendation for underfloor heating. 😉

What exactly? Such offhand remarks are 0.0% helpful.

Hello everyone,
a project is always subject to criticism. But that is normal nowadays, especially on the internet.
There is nothing wrong with installing underfloor heating in concrete. There are also versions installed under driveways, which significantly help prevent icing.
Of course, heating outdoor areas is questionable, like operating a garden hot tub in winter.
But back to the project:
Insulating below would mean calculating an additional height. That’s good. Thank you very much.
There are also some manufacturers offering good products with a low profile.
But how could the structure be: 1. Insulation, 2. Underfloor heating, 3. Bedding sand/screed, 4. Slabs?

Good luck, Tarik
