Hopefully, a picture will appear here...

(Please forgive me if the forum software doesn’t cooperate perfectly...)

Below is an image, and where the red arrows are marked, the mystery begins for me...

1.) At the spots where you can see a square gray shape, there is a duct hidden behind it that goes at least about 75 cm (30 inches) horizontally into the wall. The entire structure has such shafts everywhere up to several meters in height. I tried lighting a small smoke fire in one of them just to see if the smoke would escape anywhere, but the airflow was poor and the smoke did not come out anywhere—except through a few cracks in the natural stone. It was only a small smoke fire each time, made from a few tissue paper handkerchiefs.

2.) At the two other spots where there is no gray visible, you can see a horizontal channel running just below the surface of the masonry. Elsewhere (not pictured), you can see from some chipped stones that these channels even go around corners...

What is this strange feature?
==> Are the walls hollow on the inside for insulation purposes? (This was what my predecessor suggested, although he did not fully investigate the structure.)
==> Or is it just a layer of hollow bricks built onto the surface?

The exterior walls are about nearly 1 meter (3 feet) thick in most places, as measured at the windows... 🙄
==> Could this possibly have been some kind of air duct heating system?

I hope you find this as fascinating as I do. Best regards...
