Hello everyone,

According to our site manager, the groundwork at our site could start in three weeks.

We haven’t booked any vacation yet, but we would like to travel for three weeks at the end of July.

Were any of you on vacation during the construction phase, or is there a specific period or stage when one should definitely be present?

Or can we just go away without any worries?

I asked the site manager, and he just said, “go ahead” 🙂

How did you handle this?

You could also contact the general contractor before the vacation to ask if anything might come up in the next few weeks that would require a quick response from you.

I just called the general contractor.

The earthworks are scheduled to start in week 25, followed by the foundation slab. The masons are planned to be on site in week 33. By then, we will already be back.

The general contractor said nothing further will happen after the foundation slab. It is more likely to be delayed than to proceed faster.

The foundation slab will be inspected and approved by our expert. I also called the expert and asked for his opinion on our idea. He said it’s better to do this now rather than realize in autumn that we want to go on vacation.

Since we will be traveling by car, I will book a hotel with a cancellation option. If it turns out we have to stay, we will cancel, but at least we can travel if the schedule holds.

Thanks for your opinions!

Normally, you wouldn’t want to leave your own child with other people for a long time. You want to see it grow. I feel the same way about the house that’s being built 🙂

😱 😱

Well… I guess everyone sees this differently.

Call it blunt or whatever, but for me, a house is just a house—not something I associate with deep emotions. Even if I don’t see it grow and develop, I would still move in and feel comfortable there.

No vacation. I don’t have one and would never take one.
Okay, we didn’t check the staking of the foundation slab, so something could have gone wrong there. But from the masonry work onwards, we were regularly on site and were able to have one or another mistake corrected right away.

I think the foundation slab is hugely underestimated. In my opinion, it’s the most important part of the entire build. If something doesn’t fit there, you can’t fix it afterward (once the shell construction is up). Having an independent building site supervisor is, I assume, standard practice everywhere unless you are a professional yourself.

As someone with both a child and a house, I would definitely make a distinction in importance, but I think I know what you mean. 😀

During the screed curing period (installed by the general contractor), we had about a week with no work taking place (could take place) – which we used for a rather spontaneous vacation on an Aida cruise.

Definitely 🙂
It’s somewhat similar (!) to an illegitimate child suddenly showing up at the door… 😉
