Hello everyone,
According to our site manager, the groundwork at our site could start in three weeks.
We haven’t booked any vacation yet, but we would like to travel for three weeks at the end of July.
Were any of you on vacation during the construction phase, or is there a specific period or stage when one should definitely be present?
Or can we just go away without any worries?
I asked the site manager, and he just said, “go ahead” 🙂
How did you handle this?

It was something like that for us... Although I find site excavation interesting, I don’t think you have much influence or control over it. It’s more about whether and how soil is stored, distributed, or maybe given away, etc. Possibly also things like a rainwater tank or utility lines. But those details should be included in the site manager’s plan anyway.
Therefore, considering that weather can quickly cause delays, I believe taking a vacation during this phase is definitely possible. The transition from the shell construction to interior work and electrical installations is when I would rather make sure to be available.

No vacation. I don’t have one and would never take one.
Okay, we didn’t check the layout of the foundation slab, so something could have gone wrong there. But from the start of the masonry work, we were regularly on site and were able to have one or two mistakes corrected right away.

My humble layman's opinion: That really depends a lot on the construction method. If you are building a turnkey house or using a construction management contract (BT), I could imagine having a relaxing vacation. Otherwise, probably not. Too often, questions go unanswered. We were and still are at the construction site almost every day.

Did you go on vacation during the construction phase? Definitely not!
I don’t understand that either – your mind isn’t free when managing a major project. You want to spend every free second at the site, double-check measurements, bring snacks to the tradespeople, and so on. You’re the main contact person for the interior work… and anyway: you want to take photos… 🙄
Why would you want to be out in the countryside or at the beach?

Are you building a turnkey house or managing the project yourself? I could imagine taking a relaxed vacation. Neither. You have to ventilate the rooms yourself, cover the foundation slab if the wind blows the plans away, and so on.
We spent a lot of time at the house, had picnics, visited other homeowners nearby, enjoyed some beers, etc.
