Hello everyone,

I’m curious to see who has creative ideas to help me with my self-built trash bin system:

Problem:

Tears: Due to the lack of a support for the bags, the contents eventually become too heavy, causing the bags to tear in some areas.

Holes: Because of insufficient or improper attachment points, holes develop where trash sometimes falls through, as there are only four spots where the bag can be secured.

Solutions:

Tears: Either attach a board at the bottom for the bag to rest on, so that the weight is no longer on the bag itself. Or buy a custom-sized trash bin or build one yourself from wood.

Holes: Either apply adhesive tape to the bag to pull it up where holes would otherwise form and stick it down (disadvantage: the adhesive eventually loses effectiveness). Or use some kind of ring attachment. Or build a custom solution for the self-built trash bin.

I really need advice. I’m getting desperate here.

Best regards

Hi Lagun4,

My girlfriend already received a finished solution from the kitchen studio. It was a bin recessed into the countertop. There was also a rubber lip attached that you place over the trash bag inside the bin. It looked good and practical.

I would also do the whole thing with a bucket, as I never considered doing it without one.

The bucket should be fully removable, so the bag can simply be pulled over the trash can and held in place by the trash can itself.

Thanks in advance for the responses.

So, a bucket seems simple at first. The question is whether the bucket fits or if it can be custom-made. So far, I’ve built everything myself and can’t just buy a standardized waste bin system. The other issue is the nice wooden lids that fit perfectly flush with the countertop.

I would try to make the buckets removable, similar to hbf12’s approach. Either attach a pull-out rail under the countertop where a bucket with a bag can be hung, or install a second pull-out shelf (e.g., Ikea Komplement) beneath the countertop, where the buckets can be hooked by their rims.

The lids fit well until the board and lid swell due to moisture. As nice as that may look, I can predict it won’t last. I’m currently away but will look for a solution once I’m back home.
