Hello everyone,

Our topping-out ceremony is coming up in about two weeks. Given the current COVID-19 situation, it’s clear that we will celebrate only with the construction workers, our new neighbors, and our parents. However, it doesn’t feel right not to show some appreciation to the shell builders, who have done an excellent job. Maybe a nicely packaged “worker’s lunch bag” handed to the site supervisor for distribution? Should we inform the neighbors that the celebration will be postponed, or is it better not to mention it at all? What are your thoughts on this? How would you hold a potential topping-out ceremony in these times?

Thanks to all!

Best regards,

Just skip it.
You can celebrate moving in with neighbors, family, and friends. Tradespeople appreciate a bonus more.

Dear everyone: No!
The celebration is traditionally important but is unfortunately less commonly observed or turned into just “some kind of party.” The event brings together builders and clients and is said to give the house a soul! It creates a sense of belonging and also honors good, old craftsmanship.
This is mainly about tradition! The idea of giving cash seems to be more of a Western tradition.

But no longer for the tradespeople. They finish work at 2 PM and still have to drive an hour back to the company. They voluntarily shift this by an hour. Their saying on the roof beam is "leisure time"... and for that, the builder pays a few bucks!

In times of C. just postpone. There are other days to celebrate.

You are basically right. Often it’s crews who carry out the trades, not just "the tradesperson." Still, this celebration has value for "us." Everyone has to decide for themselves whether they prefer to post or raise a toast!
I really like the classic traditions!!!!

Nonsense. Neither the craftsmen are really keen on it, nor is this tradition common today. It is often no longer carried out. We did it, it was nice. But it is really not a must.

But neither the contractor nor the client – those times are long gone. Good morning @Vicky Pedia

@ypg, @Bookstar I have no idea what kind of construction companies you work with. I build around 8 to 10 houses per year, and so far I've had a topping-out ceremony for each one. Of course, it’s not mandatory. I just mentioned that it’s a nice tradition.

Anyone who holds a topping-out ceremony these days should be punished! It would simply be foolish and irresponsible. Tradition or not...
