ᐅ Toilet too close to the wall, what now?

Hello and happy New Year to everyone,

our house handover has now almost been completed, and after the site manager left, I finally used our new toilet... what can I say: I can’t move my right hand "backward" because the toilet is only 13 cm (5 inches) away from the wall, and, for example, my husband with broad shoulders actually touches the wall.

The layout plans did not include measurements for the position of fixtures, and at no point was it clear to us that there might be a minor planning error. In my opinion, the framework for the toilet could certainly have been shifted slightly to the right toward the bidet to create more space from the wall.

It seems that there is no official standard for the distances of fixtures from walls, except for accessible bathrooms.

Is this considered a defect? Or did we just get unlucky?

Does anyone have any knowledge about the legal situation for us?

Thank you very much

A different question of preference.... Do you really need a bidet ???? Or just get rid of it and put the toilet in the middle instead

Clear answer: YES, DEFINITELY!!!

When on vacation, I always make sure that the holiday apartments have a bidet. My children love rinsing their feet in the bidet after a trip to the beach. Simple and practical. No need to go to the bathtub or shower.

At least as a right-handed person, you’re fully “in the game” again when using the toilet.
Both of our toilet paper holders are on the left. So, what now?

My suggestion was serious: reaching across is no problem at all.

If you want to completely renovate and start from scratch: it would also be possible to remove the toilet and bidet and instead install a shower toilet in the center.

Layout drawing:

Small bathroom floor plan with bathtub, toilet, sink, and door

To ensure enough space around a toilet, a minimum clearance of 20 cm (8 inches) from the side of the toilet bowl to the nearest wall or adjacent sanitary fixture should be maintained.

At least, that’s how I remember it. I am planning a minimum of 80 cm (31.5 inches).

The design follows the reference drawing, but 15cm (6 inches); 13cm (5 inches) is too little. Someone probably forgot to account for the plaster.

That’s why you end up sitting unevenly!
