ᐅ Toilet too close to the wall, what now?

Hello and happy New Year to everyone,

our house handover has now almost been completed, and after the site manager left, I finally used our new toilet... what can I say: I can’t move my right hand "backward" because the toilet is only 13 cm (5 inches) away from the wall, and, for example, my husband with broad shoulders actually touches the wall.

The layout plans did not include measurements for the position of fixtures, and at no point was it clear to us that there might be a minor planning error. In my opinion, the framework for the toilet could certainly have been shifted slightly to the right toward the bidet to create more space from the wall.

It seems that there is no official standard for the distances of fixtures from walls, except for accessible bathrooms.

Is this considered a defect? Or did we just get unlucky?

Does anyone have any knowledge about the legal situation for us?

Thank you very much

It’s only possible if you strip the wall back to the shell. Different built-in frames, different water pipes, different waste pipes – nothing large fits through with the bidet ;-)

Of course, you have to extend or replace the pipes. My plumber usually finishes that in an hour during drywall installation.

The situation is really and finally hopeless. €150 compensation for the lesson learned. Next house will be better.

Nonsense, there are far more serious “construction issues” that would actually be problematic. Relaying a few tiles and three pipes is usually no big deal.

Not problematic, but absolutely EVERYTHING has to be redone (a complete teardown including replacing the in-wall frames). This is not something that can be done "quickly." It takes a lot of time and money. You can take another look at the photo from the shell construction phase.

Clearances and movement spaces for sanitary fixtures are regulated in VDI 6000. As far as I know, the 20cm (8 inches) distance to a wall is also specified there. Commonly, 40-50cm (16-20 inches) from the wall to the center of the toilet cistern is used, depending on the available space.

A different question of belief... Do you really need a bidet? Or should it be removed altogether, leaving only the toilet in the center?

Here's a different point of view... Do you really need a budget????

If you don’t have one, it’s simply impossible to judge – but if you have one and use it properly, you’ll never give it up. It even saves detergent in the washing machine...

Shouldn't it be possible to clean yourself well enough without a bidet so that you don’t need extra detergent for your underwear? A bidet is a nice feature, but there is also wet toilet paper.
