Hello everyone,
I am currently facing the task of installing the doors for my Ikea Metod kitchen cabinets. I want to work efficiently while ensuring no damage occurs and the doors are perfectly aligned. Since Ikea’s instructions can sometimes be a bit brief, I would like to hear from you: What tips and tricks do you have specifically for the quick and secure installation of Ikea Metod cabinet doors? Are there any tools, techniques, or sequences that have proven effective for you? I am particularly interested in how to best adjust the Metod door hinges to avoid misaligned doors and also to make the fastening process as stress-free as possible. Thanks in advance for your experience!

The note about torque is crucial. Ikea Metod cabinets typically use MDF or particleboard, which can fray if too much torque is applied. A setting around 3-4 Nm is usually optimal to screw securely without causing damage. Since your cordless drill doesn’t have torque control, I recommend using a short drill or screwdriver bit and carefully driving the screws — not with full power and not rotating in place for too long.
Regarding the gaps: For Metod doors, a gap of about 2-3 mm (0.08-0.12 inches) between the doors or between the doors and the cabinet front is common. You can adjust the exact gap width to your personal preference, but it’s important that the gaps remain even. To ensure this, when adjusting multiple hinges, align all doors simultaneously before gradually tightening the screws. It helps to measure with a plastic card or a small gap gauge to prevent uneven gaps forming, for example, across all doors.
To prevent hinges from popping open due to excessive pressure, it’s also helpful not to tighten the screws all the way but rather to tighten them firmly by hand plus a quarter to half turn.

Just a quick tip: Always mark all drill holes with a pencil and check whether the hinges are really positioned at the correct height before screwing them in. Usually, fully screw in the metal anchor screw first, then adjust with the set screws, and finally tighten everything.

regarding your questions: A torque of around 3 Nm is ideal. If your cordless drill cannot provide that precisely, reduce the force and work carefully in smaller steps to avoid stressing the material. It also often helps to set the drill to low speed and low torque, if adjustable.
Manufacturer specifications usually recommend a 2 mm (0.08 inch) gap, which works well for a uniform appearance. I suggest maintaining a 2 mm (0.08 inch) gap between the doors. You can use a small plastic spacer as a distance holder to make installation easier. After hanging, it is important to adjust the hinges, as even small discrepancies can be eliminated this way.
At the beginning, you can practice with a single door to better understand how the hinges behave before installing all the doors.

Are there standardized measurements for the gap width on Metod doors, or is each kitchen cabinet individual?

Hey elion65, you can definitely do this, no worries!
What really helps is being patient during the installation and taking your time to carefully adjust the doors after hanging them. Even if it seems annoying at first, it’s totally worth it for a perfect result!
Personally, I always spend a few extra minutes fine-tuning the Metod hinges because the adjustments are really easy with the three screws (horizontal, vertical, depth).
Also, my tip: regularly check that all hinges are sitting flush to avoid any strange noises or warping later on – this also extends the lifespan of the doors.
Keep at it, step by step, and it will turn out great!
