Hello everyone, I am currently dealing with a fairly specific issue that might also interest some of you: I am looking for effective tips and tricks on how to attach magnetic handles to the IKEA KALLAX shelving unit.

The handles should be not only visually appealing but also practical, without damaging the unit or requiring major modifications. It is especially important to me to know which type of magnets work best, how to securely fix them, and if there are any particular handling recommendations to ensure durability.

I am also interested if anyone has experience with alternative fastening methods besides screws and adhesives, possibly even magnetic solutions that can be removed without leaving any residue.

I look forward to your ideas, experiences, and of course any critical feedback. Thanks in advance!

So, I think magnetic handles on a KALLAX are basically a disguised design experiment – most manufacturers prefer to sell the classic screw-on handles.

I also wonder why anyone would want magnetic handles in the first place. Has anyone considered that magnets lose their strength over time?

In my opinion, neodymium magnets of type N52 are the strongest, and the issue isn’t the magnet itself but how to fix the magnets securely so they don’t break off. Adhesive is often the deciding factor here. It’s unlikely to avoid any damage completely.

For a clean installation, the surface should be degreased before gluing, and it’s important to use an adhesive that remains flexible – because rigid adhesives can cause the magnets to pop off later. But honestly, who wants to see that permanently under magnetic handles anyway?

I need to ask a critical question:

That is only partially true. High-quality neodymium magnets hardly lose their strength under normal use, unless they are overheated, physically damaged, or exposed to strong external magnetic fields.

I find the following question much more important: What is the distance between the handle and the shelf panel? After all, magnetic force decreases rapidly with distance. I suspect many users underestimate this and end up disappointed when the handle does not hold well.

For good adhesion, the magnets should be as close to the metal as possible – which in a shelf without a metal frame can only be achieved by recessed steel plates. It might also be worth combining a small steel plate behind the KALLAX panel to give the magnet better support.

Is the shelf material MDF or particleboard? This also affects the adhesive and how well the magnet holds.

I would like to add some information:

The KALLAX shelf does not have a continuous metal plate on the shelving surfaces; instead, it is made of coated fiberboard.

For magnetic handles, this means you either need to:

1. Attach a small metal plate behind the front panel that the magnets can attract.
2. Or fix the magnets directly onto the handle, which is then mounted using glue or screws.

Important: Neodymium magnets are recommended because of their strong holding power. However, I suggest using felt pads or other cushioning on the contact surface to prevent marks.

Regarding adhesive: Superglue (cyanoacrylate) is strong but often brittle. For better durability, I recommend epoxy glue, which is flexible, adheres well to wood and metal, and lasts a long time.

If you have any further questions about mounting, I’m happy to help!

Magnetic handles are great, but without metal behind the panel, they don’t hold well.
It’s best to glue a thin steel plate to the back; then neodymium magnets work really well.

For attachment, use epoxy adhesive, as it holds better than superglue.

In many cases, screws are still necessary; otherwise, you risk the handle coming off.

Hi, I can only agree with Ennopra61 because I have tried it myself and realized how tricky this topic actually is.

I was especially interested in whether magnetic handles work well with children or in a busy household, since they might accidentally grab them and the handle could slip.

I find that very important because after my first DIY project, I noticed many small scratches that really bothered me. The idea of using small protective pads can definitely be a great tip for anyone who uses their KALLAX shelves with care.

In any case, you need a bit of patience; I feel like adjustments have to be made repeatedly. But it’s worth it!
