Hello everyone,

We plan to start building our house in spring 2019. Is it advisable to begin the planning process now?

We already have a plot of land, but it still needs to be transferred to my name and re-measured. (As it is currently registered, it is too small, and we need to acquire a few meters from our neighbor’s property.)

Yes, that should be enough—if you only want to plan quickly and focus on purely technical questions. But in a forum, you have to expect more answers than you originally asked for. It can easily take several weeks just watching the advisors here discourage you from having a second bathroom door or debating the ongoing conflicts between different wall construction approaches. And in between, you'll often be referred to a specialist.

Building a house has so many facets, and reading the expertise from advisors C and D to evaluate where the differing opinions of advisors A and B are based on facts or just personal viewpoints can definitely slow the process down.

Also, many answers you get in a forum will lead to new questions you didn’t even consider before.

That's exactly what I'm thinking... I want to plan everything thoroughly on the one hand, and on the other hand, handle everything relatively stress-free.

However, I’m a bit worried that we might get bogged down in the small details.

There is someone who spent one and a half years refining their floor plan.
In the end, it grew by about 50m² (540 sq ft) because they incorporated every idea we outsiders suggested, especially through their detailed questions.
So, construction could actually start this year.
However, I would advise caution!

Best regards, Yvonne

Thinking about it is certainly enjoyable and makes sense. Concrete planning, such as obtaining quotes, having drawings prepared, and hiring companies, seems a bit early at this stage. However, starting about a year before construction begins is definitely advisable given the current demand in the construction industry. For example, in the north, there are very popular and affordable building companies that are fully booked for 12 to 16 months. Karsten
