Hello,

We have planned a 170x75cm (67x30 inches) window on the west side of the house on both the ground floor and the first floor.
My wife strongly prefers a tilt window for aesthetic reasons (since it’s 1.70 meters (5 feet 7 inches) wide, a single sash window isn’t really an option).
The downside is that you really can’t use that window for cross-ventilation, and it’s also not very easy to clean.

Personally, I would prefer to install a tilt-and-turn window (two sashes) so it can open fully. Of course, it looks a bit less elegant because of the central mullion, but in my opinion, it’s far more practical.
Additionally, I like the idea that you can leave this kind of window open longer in the morning or evening without worrying about insects getting inside through the patio doors.

Does anyone in the forum have ideas on how this could be solved differently?

Thanks and best regards

Definitely avoid standard tilt windows if they cannot be easily accessed from the outside, which is usually the case with roof windows. We once had this in an attic apartment where the windows gradually became increasingly covered with algae, moss, or similar over the course of a few years, making them less transparent because it was simply not possible to reach those areas for cleaning. So either you have to go onto the roof regularly, or sooner or later you will probably face these kinds of problems.

It’s just a given that this window can’t be used for shock ventilation.

Which isn’t a big deal.

Also, it’s not particularly easy to clean.

That does get more difficult on the upper floor, but it’s possible with a ladder (and it’s not like you clean that often).

For what purpose?

Plenty of bugs can get in through open windows anyway…

Before opting for a tilt window, I’d rather go with fixed glazing. I’ve chosen that myself for two windows because of the view (though only on the ground floor).

It is indeed more difficult upstairs, but still manageable with a ladder (after all, cleaning isn’t done that often).

Lots of critters come in through open windows anyway...

If I had to choose, I’d rather go with fixed glazing than a tilt-and-turn window. I actually chose fixed glazing myself for two windows because of the view (although only on the ground floor).

Fully opening windows are much better for fresh air and cross-ventilation. With these windows, it’s also much easier to install insect screens compared to patio doors, where it tends to be more complicated and less attractive.

I understand choosing fixed glazing for the view, although in this case there is only the neighbor’s wall to look at—so it’s not really a factor. ;-)

Are there no longer windows that rotate around the horizontal axis? A sash that can be fully opened for ventilation and cleaning.

You’ll need to come to an agreement yourselves; we can’t make that decision for you. At this point, I would also either go for a fixed glazing or a double casement window.

Regarding cleaning, there are also telescopic poles available with hose connectors.
