ᐅ Tiles on synthetic resin plaster? Will anything stick to it at all?

Karsten B1 Sep 2021 13:54Hello everyone,
This concerns an exterior facade but also tiles. Since I couldn’t find a suitable forum for this, I am posting my question here.
Unfortunately, I am not a professional in construction matters and hope to get some advice here.
I am planning to have a part of an exterior facade covered with tiles.
There are concerns regarding the adhesive bond because the topcoat is made of synthetic resin render (render grain size 1.5 mm (0.06 inches)).
From what I learned in a discussion with a tiler, no adhesive will properly stick to this render.
Do you have any ideas? Are there any experiences of this kind?
Alternatives suggested so far were:
1) The render and insulation must be removed where the tiles are to be applied. Then, pretreat with a two-component bonding bridge and work with fast-setting tile adhesive.
2) Screw boards like waterproof gypsum boards or cement boards to the wall, and then bond the tiles onto these.
The total tiled area is about 30 m² (320 ft²), arranged either in a horizontal layout (approx. 1.8 x 17 m (6 x 56 ft)) or vertical layout (6.3 x 4.4 m (21 x 14 ft)).
I am looking for a solution that minimizes potential sources of failure as much as possible. Ideally, the tiles could be applied directly onto the facade or at least appear to be bonded directly to it.
I assume that alternative 1) (see above) will probably not be feasible.
Here is the facade description I received from the architect:
ETICS (external thermal insulation composite system) for the facade consists of a mineral wool insulation board, lambda value 0.034 W/mK, adhesive mortar, and reinforced organic base coat with a nominal layer thickness of 5 mm (0.2 inches), an intermediate coating (primer), as well as a synthetic resin render topcoat with render grain size 1.5 mm (0.06 inches), colored throughout with a scraped texture finish. Color chosen by client or architect, at least 4 different colors, lightness reference value similar to RAL 7024. Fire performance: Class A2 according to EN 13501-1.
Insulation board thickness: 20 cm (8 inches).
Material: STO THERM MINERAL.
Of course, time is also pressing now, so I would really appreciate your help.
Please excuse me if I am not using the correct technical terminology or if my request sounds unprofessional in any way.
Thank you very much and best regards,
Karsten

Overall, the continuous tiling area is about 30 square meters (approximately 1.8 x 17 meters or 6.3 x 4.4 meters), either lengthwise or heightwise. A plaster surface of 30 square meters (approximately 1,800 square feet) means a lot of material to remove by knocking it off, but on the other hand: should the tiling be applied on top instead?
Please show the relevant facade and what is planned to be applied there.

Please show the relevant facade and what is supposed to go on it. Here are the photos.
Thanks for the quick responses.
Whether to use portrait or landscape format is not yet decided. The tiles will form a continuous image. The drafts are only meant to give an impression and will be redrawn once I have all the necessary information.

So, in principle, something should hold on synthetic resin-based plaster. A specialized supplier can definitely provide assistance. @nordanney this is the information I received from a tiler who discussed it with his technician. He said that he cannot guarantee that the tiles will adhere and is quite certain that there will be problems.

Please show the relevant facade and what is supposed to go on it. And: Yes, the tiles should ideally be applied on top. So that it looks as "naturally tiled" as possible (similar to Portugal/the Netherlands). At the moment, however, I am open to any solution. Of course, preferably one where the additional effort in terms of work and costs is low and as simple as possible to avoid potential errors.
