Hello everyone,

We have been living in our house for almost 3 years now. Unfortunately, a defect has appeared.

Several tiles in the area of the front door (first row of tiles) have come loose from the substrate and are now hollow. This is not a big issue, the tiler has already been informed and will fix the problem next week.

However, I see a bigger problem. Right in front of the side panel of the front door is the staircase leading to the upper floor. In the area of the front door, the staircase stands on the tiles, and one of these tiles is affected. When you step on the staircase, you can hear the tile is loose and creaks underfoot. This did not happen before.

Is there any way to fix this without having to dismantle the staircase?

Thanks and best regards,
Matthias

Here is a photo of the stair support on the tiles. Is this sufficient in combination with the other picture?

Somehow it didn’t work. Here is the picture.

Hello Matthias,
unfortunately your picture doesn’t help much. Are you sure the staircase rests ON the tiles and that the underlay is not laid around the staircase?
Can you post a picture of the connection between the stair stringer and the tile?

Our steel stringer staircase was even installed directly on the base slab, so before the screed was applied to the floor.

Hello Jochen,

yes, definitely. The architect had us hire the stair builder only after the tiler was finished. So all the tiles were already completed when the stairs arrived.

I don’t have a photo like that right now. But everything is really on the tiles.

Regards
Matthias

Then I'm surprised that the tiles have lasted so long.
But it’s also strange behavior from the stair builder to do something like that.

However, I am just a layperson.

I have now taken additional photos of the support and the tiles. The tiles beneath the support have not shifted, but they are hollow underneath. The surrounding tiles have sunk, causing the grout to crack.
