Tiler costs: hourly rate or price per square meter?

How much does it roughly cost to have tiles installed? Is it usually charged by hourly rate or per square meter?

Thanks for your tips and experiences!

Best regards

In my construction description, it says the material cost is 28 euros per square meter (m²). Does that mean I can choose tiles up to that price, and the general contractor will install them for me?

What happens if I stay below that price?
I recently checked at some hardware stores, and I can already find tiles for 5 euros per square meter (m²). The 28 euros seems quite high to me.

Or do I need to include the tiler’s cost when working with a general contractor?

Yes, that means you can choose tiles at this price per square meter (square yard). If you stay below that, it should actually be credited, or you could consider tiling a larger area.

You shouldn’t base your estimate on hardware store prices, as those tiles are usually of lower quality. Check with a specialized tile supplier, and you’ll see that you’re just about staying within the price range, depending on your quality expectations.

You don’t have to include the tile setter. Your developer has their own company. However, if you think it might be cheaper, for example, if someone in your family can do it, you can have that service removed from the developer’s contract.

The €28 is probably just the tile price.

Of course, there are tiles for €5 per m² (approximately $5.40 per sq ft).
However, you need to be careful in hardware stores around here.
Sometimes the prices are given per m², other times it’s the price per individual tile. In some cases, a single tile can cost more than €5.

If you want a border trim, the price goes up quickly.
I think €28 is a reasonable estimate, but you probably won’t get below €25.

Hello,

thanks for the information.

I have a good example right now: my uncle completely retiled his bathroom himself.
He used granite tiles on the floor that cost about 50 euros per square meter (5.5 square feet) ^^

and for the walls, nice white tiles with a dark blue shimmer that I really liked and that looked good quality; they only cost 8 euros per square meter (0.9 square feet).

But I think I will probably focus more on quality so that the tiles have a high abrasion resistance rating. (Is that the correct term?)

Yes, it’s roughly like that. But abrasion usually occurs only on the floor, less so on the wall.

Does anyone know where to find good and affordable tiles? At which specialist retailer? And what should be considered when buying tiles?
