ᐅ Tightening Screws on BILLY Shelving – How Often Is It Recommended?

Hello everyone, a few months ago I assembled a Billy bookcase from IKEA and now I’m wondering how often it makes sense to retighten the screws to ensure long-term stability. The shelf is quite heavily loaded in the living room, and I want to avoid any instability or damage caused by the screws loosening over time. Are there any recommendations on how frequently these screws should be checked or tightened? And what signs of wear should definitely prompt action? I look forward to your experiences and advice.

Question for Nauklo: What type of load does your shelf support? Books, collectibles, or rather light decorations?Good question, thanks!
The shelf is in my living room and mainly filled with books, along with some binders and occasional decorations like photo frames or small plants. So the weight is fairly consistently high, which is why I’m concerned about its stability. The lower part of the shelf is particularly heavily loaded.
I therefore suspect that an inspection every 3 to 6 months could be reasonable, probably leaning towards the shorter interval since it really carries a permanent load.
I completely understand that you don’t want to take any risks with such heavy weight. Especially with books, the shelf is under constant stress :-)
That’s really a great idea. Sometimes I also worry about forgetting it. That’s why I use calendar reminders to keep track of tightening the screws.
If it helps, take about 10–15 minutes for each inspection, check all the screws, and gently wiggle the shelf. This way you can easily tell where tightening might be needed or if everything is secure.

Make tightening the screws a small ritual, for example during your spring cleaning or when rearranging furniture.

One more tip for the correct procedure when tightening screws: When you tighten one screw, work your way systematically through all the screws. Don’t just tighten the top or the visibly loose ones. This helps prevent the shelf from warping unevenly. Regularly check the stability during the process.
Also, don’t forget the back panel of the BILLY shelf. It contributes significantly to the overall stability. Check the fastenings here as well and tighten the screws if necessary. This is often overlooked but very important.
