Hello,

we are currently selecting the hardwood flooring for our construction project. We have chosen a parquet from Terhürne (natural oiled oak, model B12 or B12b).
The parquet flooring is offered with two different wear layer thicknesses: 3.5 mm (30 years manufacturer’s warranty) and 2.5 mm (15 years manufacturer’s warranty). The additional cost is 8 € per m² (approximately 0.75 € per ft²). We have about 150 m² (1,615 ft²) to install, so the total extra cost would be around 1,200 €.
Is this additional cost worth it in practice?
Probably the more expensive option can be sanded one more time, but is that really done?
What would you recommend?
Thanks for your feedback!

I think it would be worth it to me.

I would definitely go for the higher-quality option.

Sanding once is more cost-effective than reinstalling later. This can, for example, be done by a carpenter. Otherwise, ask a carpenter if they can give you advice on how important a thicker wear layer is.

I wonder who has actually sanded off the entire wear layer before. I would estimate that a full sanding typically removes about 0.2 to 0.3 millimeters (0.008 to 0.01 inches). How often do you realistically do this? Maybe on heavily used areas that are easily accessible.

I would choose the thinner layer because I don’t think I would actually sand it down multiple times.
