Hello everyone,

what is the general opinion in this forum about thermostatic mixer valves for the shower?

I have seen these occasionally in hotels and found them quite convenient. However, I am a bit concerned about their potential for malfunctions or defects.

We plan to install them in the three rental apartments in the house.

Looking forward to your opinions!

I have been using these things for decades and was quite surprised during construction that their use was even up for discussion and apparently still not standard. However, none of mine have ever broken. Since all of mine are surface-mounted, it wouldn’t be a big issue anyway. Two screws, replace, done.

My opinion: nobody really needs it

but...

In the main bathroom, this question hardly arises since all higher-quality shower setups with rain shower heads come standard with thermostatic controls. In the guest bathroom, we ended up choosing it as well, because the extra cost is relatively low (<150€ gross), but it offers a much more premium appearance.

I am quite surprised to read about so many problems... I have had one installed in my condominium for 18 years without any issues.

Of course, I also have them installed again in the house – built-in (flush-mounted).

And yes: I find the constant mixing of hot and cold water annoying and old-fashioned. Turning it on and (with circulation) it takes just a few seconds until the water is comfortably warm and at the right temperature!

We are also getting thermostats – I just find it more comfortable when the water temperature doesn’t keep fluctuating. We already had one in my parents’ house (built in 1975), and it did eventually break. In that case, it just meant you had to set it to around 50°C (122°F) to reach a comfortable temperature. After that, it kept that temperature consistently. A “broken” thermostat doesn’t necessarily mean a complete failure…

Thank you all for the feedback. The survey trend, although statistically significant, favors the thermostat valve. We will be installing that as well!

Hello everyone,

I would like to revisit this topic.

We are wondering if it might make sense to install a thermostatic mixer valve on the bathtub as well. That way, you can set a temperature, for example 38°C (100°F), and the temperature will always be optimal without having to juggle between hot and cold water.
