Hello,

My girlfriend and I are currently planning our new build. Construction starts this week, and we still have a few questions.

We want to cover the inside of our shower with natural stone. (Picture attached)
1. Does anyone have experience with how easy or difficult it is to maintain?
2. What is the best way to install a shower panel or shower fittings on such a wall? If the panel is 20cm (8 inches) wide, do you need to leave that width free without natural stone on the wall, or are there other solutions?

Best regards and thank you very much for your help in advance.

I can imagine that soap residues and hair will be the main issue with the protruding grout lines.

Harsh cleaners are generally not desirable in a household unless absolutely necessary...
We currently have glass mosaic tiles in the shower area, and unfortunately, we have to treat the grout with fairly strong cleaners every few months... which is not exactly great for our lungs 🙁
I also suspect that many cleaners are not suitable for these panels, whether they are natural stone or plastic, but instead cause damage.

For the shower area, I would play it safe with ceramic or porcelain tiles and use natural stone look materials above the washbasin or under the bathtub 🙂

Hello,

At the moment, we have a combined shower/sauna unit. Mostly made of plastic with smooth surfaces but also some "grooves" (joints).
Here it’s enough to spray the entire shower once a week with a strong cleaner and rinse it off.

I was also thinking about some kind of sealing treatment for the natural stone.
Does anyone have experience with this or know someone who does?

Basically, natural stone should be protected with a high-quality natural stone sealer. (Please test it first on a small area to see how it reacts.)

Please avoid cheap DIY store products! It’s better to spend about 10 € more and get the care products from a specialist retailer.

Regarding care in the shower area, it’s mainly about personal attitude. For someone who dislikes cleaning, this might not be the right product. Generally, I would place such an installation on a different wall to enjoy it longer.

The fittings should be left free of cladding materials. (good tiler)

Best regards

Well… if you have no work, you create some…

Personally, I would advise against having a wall like that in the shower, as the maintenance effort will be quite high over time. A single “sealant” application is not enough here. The sealing needs to be renewed periodically. Also, no one can guarantee a 100% stain-free surface.
Besides, cleaning with harsh cleaners is not only harmful to the environment but also damages the sealant, the material, and not to mention yourself.

Regarding leaving gaps between the stones, it is certainly possible, but the problem starts when adjusting and grouting around the fixture covers…

If you want a nice natural stone, there are definitely other solutions.
I recommend visiting a building materials retailer with expert tile advice—it’s free and harmless.
Also recommended is a visit to a natural stone craftsman, a stonemason nearby, the one who also does gravestones.

PLEASE avoid doing this at a DIY store!!!
