ᐅ The Malm bed only squeaks when weight is applied. What could be the cause?

I have a Malm bed from IKEA that I like, but I have a problem: the bed only squeaks under load, meaning when I sit on it or move around in bed, there is an unpleasant squeaking sound. However, it is not constant, only when pressure or weight is applied to the bed. My question is: what causes this typical squeaking on a Malm bed that only occurs under load? Could it be related to the construction, screws, or the materials used? And are there simple ways to fix this without having to take the entire bed apart? I have already looked into it a bit and suspect it might be due to the connection between the slatted frame and the bed frame, but I’m not sure.

Thanks so far, the suggestions have been very helpful. I have an additional comment: The squeaking mostly occurs on one side of the bed, where the wood seems to shift slightly when you sit down. I just checked, and all screws are tight. The slatted frame fits well, but there is still a bit of play on the support rails. Could this lateral play be caused solely by the material, or would it be advisable to retrofit or reinforce the slatted frame accessories there? Perhaps special rubber buffers or felt strips, as recommended here, might help? Or is the question whether a reinforcing structure is even intended in the Malm bed?

You can often compensate for lateral play effectively with felt pads at the contact points. Rubber bumpers are also a simple way to reduce friction and rocking. By securing the slatted frame more firmly, you limit movement, which often eliminates squeaking as well.

The slatted frame sometimes shifts slightly sideways. A simple retrofit using moss rubber or felt between the slatted frame and the support can solve the problem. It is inexpensive and effective.

I will give that a try, thanks. This should at least significantly reduce the squeaking, if not eliminate it completely. I suspect this spot is causing the squeaking because there is noticeable play only there. I will report back whether it works or not.

One more tip: If the screws continue to loosen after retrofitting, it often helps to secure the screws on the threads with wood glue or a bit of cyanoacrylate adhesive. This way, they hold better against vibrations.
