Perikles535 Apr 2022 10:37Hello everyone,
I have the following problem and hope for helpful tips: While children were climbing at home, a Kallax shelf tipped over because the little ones climbed on it. The shelf was not attached to the wall and stood freely, which ultimately caused the accident. I want to avoid this risk in the future without completely giving up the furniture – it should still serve as storage but be child-safe.
Are there practical methods or solutions to reliably prevent Kallax shelves (or similar furniture) from tipping over in a child-active environment? I would also appreciate hearing about experiences or products that have proven effective in practice.
I look forward to your suggestions and assessments.

To prevent Kallax shelves from tipping over during use by children, I recommend always securing the furniture to the wall with anchors. These are usually affordable, easy to install, and provide reliable support.
Additionally, non-slip felt or rubber pads under the shelf feet can enhance stability, even if the unit is bumped. Locking individual compartments with child safety locks to discourage climbing is also an option.
In general, tipping accidents are mostly caused by a lack of proper anchoring. The shelf’s own weight combined with correct installation significantly reduces the risk.

Perhaps a combination of secure wall mounting and rearranging the surroundings could help: for example, reducing the height of objects stored on it or keeping heavy items in the lower compartments.
I think it’s important to stay patient, even when it’s stressful. Children explore their world often quickly and energetically, which inspires us adults as well. The environment should be safe but also enjoyable! 🙂

Make sure to secure the shelf to the wall. This is absolutely the best advice. Additionally, I would like to highlight the following points:1. The fixing materials should be adapted to the wall type: use toggle bolts for drywall and anchors with sufficient load capacity for concrete walls.
2. For very active children, it can be useful to secure the shelves at the bottom with base elements or to use a combined solution of wall and floor anchoring.
3. It should also be ensured that there are no overhanging objects or hard-to-reach elements that might encourage climbing.
If you are unable to install it yourself, I recommend professional help to avoid mistakes. Better safe than sorry!
