Good evening,

The latch on the front door of our newly built house often does not catch properly unless the door is closed with force.

Do we need to adjust the strike plate, or should the door be realigned elsewhere?
Here is a photo of the strike plate. It has an adjustable part and a crosswise fixed part with a recess. When we move the adjustable part, the latch no longer catches at the deepest point of the fixed part’s recess. Is this a problem?

Sure, this sounds like a typical case of the latch not engaging properly. It can be quite frustrating, especially when you have to pull the door with force each time to close it fully.

In the picture, you can clearly see the strike plate. The movable part is used to adjust the door’s closing pressure – that is, how tightly the door presses against the seal. However, the latch should snap into the fixed recess next to it, ideally centered perfectly. If you move the adjustable part too far, the latch won’t align properly with the recess, causing the door to stick or only close when pushed hard.

You might try closing the door slowly to see exactly where the latch hits. If it’s too high or too low, the door hinges might need adjusting – raising or lowering the door slightly. If the height is correct, you may need to reduce the closing pressure by adjusting the strike plate so the latch engages more easily.

Sometimes it’s also due to the seals being quite firm, which is normal for new doors. This usually eases up over time. If it doesn’t improve at all, a professional can make some precise adjustments, which is generally a straightforward fix.

But basically, the latch should fit properly into the recess; otherwise, the problem is likely to get worse rather than better over time.

Try treating the catches and latches with some silicone spray.

Many thanks for the feedback. The strike plate only needed to be moved slightly inward, so the closing pressure was reduced. Now the door closes perfectly.
