ᐅ Patio slabs on pedestals or gravel?

Hello everyone,

after our New Year, the construction of our balcony is planned for spring. The railing has been ordered, and porcelain tile slabs have been purchased. The balcony slab was cast in concrete, insulated with sloped insulation, and sealed with a flat roof membrane.

Should we place the tiles on pedestal supports or embed them in gravel? Does it make sense to use a drainage mat as an underlayment? We need to cover a height difference of 17cm (7 inches) from the slab up to the balcony door entrance.

Are the tiles installed before or after building the railing?

@rick2018 do you have a recommendation for a manufacturer?

Unfortunately, the boxes have already been disposed of, and the company will only bring new ones when they start working on the terrace.
So I can only give you the type in a few weeks.
You will definitely need taller ones than we did.

Protective mat under the pedestals. Glue individual pedestals to the floor.

Did you glue the pedestals to the protective mat?

Only at the beginning and end. This provides additional protection against slipping.

Ah, that's right! The slabs were recently reinstalled here on a crushed stone bed. The crushed stone was removed and re-compacted.

So far, so good.

The tall pedestal supports on balconies and such are fine, but I don’t like that hollow, dull sound when you walk on them.

If you use pedestal supports, you will be more flexible later on to run pipes or cables underneath. This is not possible with a gravel bed installation. Another advantage is that you can always make adjustments afterwards. If there is a concrete slab, I would definitely recommend using pedestal supports. And yes, the quality differences here are huge. You should avoid the cheapest low-quality products from eBay.
