I am trying to decide whether to build my new terrace with concrete or ceramic tiles.

At the hardware store, good-quality concrete tiles cost about 35-40 €/sqm (3.25-3.70 $/sqft). I also found some ceramic tiles for nearly 60 €/sqm (5.60 $/sqft). They are hollow inside and have holes on the sides.

There is quite a price difference. I wonder if it is justified and if the ceramic tiles offer any advantages. So far, I’ve only heard that they are easier to clean. Are there other benefits? How about durability—do ceramic tiles last longer?

Hello Sid,

The ceramic tiles you saw are most likely not floor tiles but intended for wall cladding. Floor tiles are generally not hollow.

Ceramic floor tiles are called "porcelain stoneware"; they are frost-resistant and available in various surface finishes, colors, and price ranges. Concrete slabs are much thicker and require a thicker layer of mortar or adhesive. Besides personal preference regarding material and surface appearance, you also need to consider the overall height of the flooring system.

Both materials are essentially very durable, although the rough surface of concrete slabs tends to attract more dirt.

It definitely has to be stone?

Because I also struggled with this question about 2 years ago, but in the end, I went with larch wood, which the manufacturer installed for us directly.

It still looks great today and feels warmer than concrete or ceramic.

Friends of ours also had wood flooring installed, and I always find it really beautiful 🙂 Personally, I also think wood fits more naturally than concrete. But in response to your question, I would find ceramic visually better.

I am also considering redesigning my terrace. So, concrete is not an option for me. The mentioned ceramic tiles are not suitable for flooring. I will use natural stone slabs, which offer a good appearance.

A wooden floor is a good option and also looks nice. I assume the terrace is covered, in which case wood is a suitable choice.
