The image from the 3D simulation shows our terrace on the first floor facing south. It is approximately 9.5 m (31 feet) wide in the middle (as you can see, the terrace becomes a bit wider towards the open southern side) and 3.5 m (11.5 feet) deep. Above the terrace, there is a frame structure, as shown. We are now considering whether to install a glass roof on this frame.
Advantages and disadvantages we have identified so far:
+ Protection from weather for the terrace, the furniture placed there, and the sliding windows leading to the terrace
+ Longer usability of the terrace during the transitional seasons as well as cooler summer evenings
- The terrace would no longer feel as open, almost like a conservatory, since parts like the west side are partly closed off by the house wall
- Could be very expensive (any experience or estimates?)
Otherwise, there will need to be good shading options even without the glass roof. The question is whether the heat would build up too much under a potential glass roof despite shading, making the terrace practically unusable during high summer. Does anyone have experience or thoughts on this?
Are there alternative ideas, perhaps a louvered roof that can be opened and closed as needed...?
I would be very grateful for any input, kind regards!
