Hi Forum,
we are currently busy planning our terrace and are still a bit undecided.
It will have an area of 20m² (215 sq ft) and definitely needs to be covered.
We are now considering what would be best... a frame made of aluminum, powder-coated steel, or wood?
Glass roof or plastic?
The floor will probably be a WPC decking.
Why did you choose your material?
What are the advantages and disadvantages?
How did you ultimately design your terrace?
Maybe you have some pictures to get inspired.
Best regards, David

This is not a conservatory but a patio roof with sliding glass doors. It is not airtight, so gas is not a major concern. Gas is also used in tents and workshops. Carbon monoxide rises upwards, and the roof structure still has openings at the front of about 8cm (3 inches), so accumulation is unlikely. However, I would only use it with a carbon monoxide detector anyway.

The advantage compared to a conservatory is that all the sliding walls can be stacked together, making the roof structure almost completely open in summer (about 75%).

The roof was completed today; the sliding walls and side wedges will be installed in two weeks.

Aluminum does not rot. Glass doesn’t either. So it probably has a long lifespan.

These are important points, I agree with you. I generally have a high opinion of aluminum too!

Relatives of mine have a patio roof made of wood and glass. I actually like the look quite a bit, but after nearly 20 years you can definitely see that it’s not new anymore. Wood can age better or worse, depending on the type.

@DanielS
That already looks pretty good.
Which type of flooring have you decided on?
How much does the roof cover cost?
I’ve gathered several quotes, and currently a powder-coated steel frame with laminated frosted glass (VSG) is my top choice.
Today, I looked at a roof cover with frosted laminated glass that has been installed for over a year... the advantage is that it requires much less cleaning than clear glass, since dirt isn’t visible right away.

The frosted glass is correct. However, we want an unobstructed view.

The cold conservatory costs us about €12,000 including installation.

For the floor, terrace slabs are planned.

Terrace slabs made of wood or stone?

Personally, I would be less drawn to frosted glass. Clear glass would be preferable, but with a slight slope. This way, rain can wash away some of the dirt on its own.

I would also prefer clear glass.
After an inspection, I am happy to do without it.
In any case, such elements should always be built with a slope, away from the house.
