Hi Forum,
we are currently busy planning our terrace and are still a bit undecided.
It will have an area of 20m² (215 sq ft) and definitely needs to be covered.
We are now considering what would be best... a frame made of aluminum, powder-coated steel, or wood?
Glass roof or plastic?
The floor will probably be a WPC decking.
Why did you choose your material?
What are the advantages and disadvantages?
How did you ultimately design your terrace?
Maybe you have some pictures to get inspired.
Best regards, David

Please upload a photo of your garden side... without knowing the house type, it is difficult to address the question.

Hi.
There’s no garden visible yet.
Why did you prefer certain materials?
At the moment, I’m leaning more toward a wooden roof structure because it would be unbeatable in terms of price, but using glued laminated timber.

We are currently installing an anthracite-coated aluminum roof structure with an 8mm (5/16 inch) laminated safety glass covering. In about 2 weeks, glass sliding doors will be added. Essentially, it will be a cold conservatory. The size is 5 x 4 meters, so 20 square meters (215 square feet).

Advantage:
It significantly extends the usage season. When the sliding doors are closed, you are protected from wind and weather. With a gas heater, it’s also bearable in winter. Aluminum doesn’t rot, and neither does glass, so it will likely have a long service life.

Disadvantage:
There is a lot of glass to clean. However, you can walk on the roof, and I think it should be cleaned about twice a year.

A retractable awning is planned for the future, but for now, we will use a sunshade sail.

@daniels87: Sounds interesting. Could you upload a picture when you have a chance?

I currently have a conservatory. Without external sun shading, it’s unusable. Even at this time of year, every ray of sunlight feels intense. So please consider this from the start, otherwise "the season" will only really be usable when the sky is overcast. In summer, the space becomes more like an oven anyway, and even sun shading doesn’t help much. Nowadays, people often install fans to circulate the air – that would also be a smart idea.

Hopefully, using a propane heater in an (almost) enclosed space was a joke.
